About My Photography Site

Welcome to the Photography of Jim R. Browning. Although I currently work as a Systems Administrator for a southern -based phone and Internet company, one of my earliest passions was photography. In fact, I used to operate my very small and extremely low-volume studio all the way back in 1989. Located in Hokes Bluff Alabama, we went under the name S and J Photography.

It wasn't long before I switched to doing photography for a company that traveled the country doing photography and portraiture for K-mart Inc. I really enjoyed this work. It was very challenging and time consuming and I seemed to have a knack for it. I was successful within the constraints of the company but soon felt the need to move on.

In 1992, I switched to being a full-time school photographer for Bill Miller Photographers. What a great place to work!! It was here that I really cut my teeth and allowed myself the chance to learn from some really good photographers. We did every kind of imaging imaginable; yearbook photos, school portraits, sporting events, dances and proms, weddings, group pictures...well, you get the picture.

It was during this time that I was introduced to Adobe Photoshop (Version 2.5). One of the photographers I worked with, Mark Brasher, and I went in together and bought a copy (It was expensive then as well) and soon we were the Photoshop experts in the company. This is also what let me to computers and away from photography.

By the late nineties, I had fallen in love with computers and wanted to go back to college and get a degree in something related to them. I left my job at Miller's and received my degree in Computer Networks in 2001. I followed that up with a BS in Technology Management in 2003. Now for some irony; having worked in IT since 1998, I find that I just don't enjoy it like I used to. I found myself missing the thrill of creativity so I soon got into songwriting and eventually, back into photography.

I recently have started producing images for sale to the public again, only this time I pick the subject and make all of the creative decisions. Most of my work is nature-based (having shot over 1,000,000 portraits while at Miller's and K-Mart, I find I don't have much interest in that line of work) with some abstract and astronomy thrown in for good measure.

I am also available for special subjects so if you need something out of the ordinary, please drop me a line at jim@jimbrowning.com. You will not be disappointed (and if you are, we'll fix it until you're not).

Please take a look around, leave me a comment if you like something (or don't like something).

You can also drop me a line if you wish to own one of my original works of art. They are for sale at various prices, depending on how it is presented (Limited Edition, Print, Lithograph, ...etc).
