| Two days after I returned from California, I found myself just above Chattanooga, Tennessee at the Chickamauga Military Park. The park is really in Georgia but Chattanooga is super close by. If you have never visited the park, it is a very good place to go and learn of some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. All around the park and battlefield, you can find statues and monuments from small to enormous. This one is Wilder tower and i believe it is the tallest monument in the park. It stands around eighty feet high and if you have the legs for it, you can climb to the top. The view is nice. The tower is named for Col. John T. Wilder of the Lightning Brigade. Col. Wilder fought on the side of the Union, which surprises many. They erroneously assume that since the battlefield is located in the Rebel state of Georgia, Col. Wilder must naturally be a Southerner. This is the beauty of the National Military Park at Chickamauga ; it honors both Rebel and Yankee soldiers, all of whom were American. There are many beautiful monuments to every unit that fought in the battle there. Each monument was created and paid for by the state represented on the monument. If you get near Chickamauga, you really should pay the park a visit. Hey, it's even free. There is a great Visitor Center as well. |
