| Every time I see an old burned out or abandoned farm house, I have to stop and take a picture. I don't know why, I just do. Amanda and I found this one (actually, Amanda saw it first) while driving up to Sequoia National Park. It is located just off the road leading to the park entrance. When I saw these rolling hills and those steps leading to where the door used to be, I couldn't help but wonder about the people that used to inhabit this place. Was it a family or just a single person? How old was the house? Were they farmers or cattle people? You see, most people have a misconception of California. Television has most of us convinced that California is all big cities, crazy people, and beaches. While that is true in some places, the fact is most of California is farm land and empty space. You can drive for an hour and never see a person. If you drive from top to bottom, you rarely even pass through a proper town. So when I picture the inhabitants of this house, I imagine they worked hard for their livelihood. They used their hands and at the end of the day felt the rewards of a hard days work. They were everyday people trying to make their way through life. I have no way of actually knowing any of this but I can dream can't I? |
